THE "BIG" SITES: Get Advice, Search, Apply
The College Board—organization of
colleges and high schools. The site includes advice for students and
parents, a college search, online applications, and everything you need to know
about SAT Program testing and the CSS Financial Aid Profile.
ACT—the
official site of the ACT. Includes college search, online
applications, advice and timelines, financial aid information and estimator,
and lots of information on ACT Program tests.
Common Application—the official site
from which you can download the application, view the list of participating
colleges, and get application information.
Peterson’s—the company which publishes
guidebooks. The site includes a college search, information on financial
aid, test prep information, online applications, and information on colleges.
Also includes information on careers and one of the best sources for
information on summer programs.
The
Princeton Review—the test prep company. The site
includes a college search, advice, information on scholarships and financial
aid, discussion groups, online applications, and lots of information on the
company’s courses and books.
US News
and World Report—the magazine publisher and
college ranker. Site includes a college search, college comparisons,
information on colleges, advice, information on financial aid and scholarships,
and the famous rankings.
Kaplan—the
test prep company. The site includes college search
and application information, graduate program information, and lots of
information on the company’s courses and books.
NACAC—professional organization of college
admission professionals. Includes information on
NACAC-sponsored college fairs.
Black Excel—college information and
resources targeting African-American students.
Hispanic
Online--includes college and scholarship information, with links, for
Hispanic students.
Oyaron—(formerly
Christopher-David) a non-profit, no-fee college counseling organization for gay
and lesbian youth.

College Websites—alphabetical
listing of colleges and universities with links to their web pages. Hosted by the
U.S.
Department of Education COOL provides information on more than 9,000
public and private institutions of higher education: four-year and two-year
colleges, as well as technical, trade and career schools. The site also
has a basic search feature.
Rankings Pages—site
sponsored by the
Community
Colleges—community college finder sponsored by the American Association of
Community Colleges.
Historically
Black Colleges and Universities—site includes information and resources
related to HBCU’s and links to the colleges’ web
sites.
Women’s Colleges—Yahoo’s list of
women’s colleges and links to their web sites.
Jesuit Colleges—site hosted
by the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities; includes search.
Catholic Colleges—site
includes a directory of member institutions of the National Catholic College
Admission Association, as well as a common application to download.
Hillel—Guide to Jewish life on over 500 campuses, as
well as campus contacts.
Canadian
Colleges—search, link, and information site for Canadian Universities.
British
Colleges and Universities--learn about colleges in the
U.S.
Accredited Colleges in Europe-- site of the Association of American
International Colleges and Universities; links to
FINANCIAL
AID AND SCHOLARSHIPS
FinAid—probably the best site for information on all
aspects of financial aid. Loans, grants, estimators; if it has to do with
financial aid, it is probably here.
FastWeb—probably the biggest and best scholarship
search site on the web. You do have to register, but it’s free.
FAFSA Online—the Department of
Education’s site with online FAFSA.
CSS Profile— the
online first step of the financial aid form required by many selective
colleges.
Scholarship
Scams—the Federal Trade Commission’s page of information on scholarship
scams.
Sallie
Mae—lots of information on student loans and financing a college education.
Career
Exploration—extensive database and information
center on careers on the website for
Medical School—the
Association of American Medical Colleges’ web site has lots of information on
considering a career in medicine as well as preparing for and applying to
medical school.
Combined
BA/MD Programs—the Association of American Medical Colleges has a list of
undergraduate/medical school combined programs on its web site.
Art Schools—links
and helpful information for the student considering a career in art or
design. This is the site of the Association of Independent Colleges of
Art and Design.
Nursing Schools—online guide to
nursing education and careers.
Law School—the
Law School Admission Council site with information on choosing and applying to
law school. Also has information on the LSAT.
Architecture
School-- education resource of site of the
Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture.
Engineering School--National Society
of Professional Engineers site, with information on students interested in
pursuing engineering studies and careers.
NCAA—site
of the college sports organization. Good information for student-athletes.
Eligibility and recruiting, letter of intent information. The Guide for the College-Bound
Student-Athlete is a must read. Also, a database of
sports at each NCAA institution.
The NCAA Clearinghouse
is where prospective collegiate student-athletes can register.
NAIA—the other intercollegiate
athletic association. Information on sports programs at member
institutions.
College
Newspapers Online—site of the American Journalism Review, with links to
online campus newspapers listed by state.
GreekPages—"the original,
the definitive fraternity and sorority website." Site includes
information on fraternities and sororities, and a searchable list of campuses
and chapters.
